Echinodorus uruguayensis
Echinodorus uruguayensis, commonly known as the Uruguay Sword Plant, is a graceful South American sword plant known for its long, narrow, ribbon-like leaves and lush green coloration. Unlike broader-leaved Amazon Swords, this species develops an elegant flowing appearance that adds height and movement without looking overly bulky.
As it matures, E. uruguayensis can develop into a large, impressive rosette, making it an excellent background or centerpiece plant for medium to large aquariums. It is a strong root feeder and performs best with a nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tab fertilization. CO₂ is not required, although additional CO₂ and good nutrition can promote faster, fuller growth.
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Lighting: Low to Medium
CO₂: Not required
Growth Rate: Moderate
Placement: Midground / Background
Height: Approximately 30–60+ cm (12–24+ in)
Propagation: Runners / adventitious plantlets
Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)
Planting Tip: Remove the pot and rockwool and plant the roots into the substrate while leaving the crown exposed. Avoid burying the crown too deeply.
Note: Plants may arrive in their emersed-grown form. Some existing foliage may change or melt after planting as the plant transitions to submerged growth. New underwater leaves typically develop longer and narrower, giving this species its characteristic flowing appearance.
