The Raccoon Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon procyon, is a recent and lesser-known addition to the aquarium trade. Named for the "mask-like" black band across its eye, similar to that of a raccoon, this tetra was discovered in the waters of South America, specifically in the Tapajós River basin of Brazil. This species is sought after for its unique markings and compatibility in community tanks.
Distinctive Features
- Coloration: The Raccoon Tetra has a distinctive black horizontal stripe across its eyes, resembling a raccoon's mask. Its body is mostly silvery with a subtle, translucent shimmer, enhancing its visual appeal under aquarium lighting. The caudal (tail) fin often features a spot or band, adding to its unique look.
- Size: This species grows to about 1.2 to 1.5 inches (3-4 cm), which makes it suitable for nano tanks and small to medium-sized community setups.
Behavior and Temperament
- Schooling Fish: As with most tetras, the Raccoon Tetra is a social, schooling species best kept in groups of six or more. Schooling helps it feel secure and brings out its natural behaviors and coloring.
- Temperament: It’s peaceful and gets along well with other small, non-aggressive fish, making it suitable for a community tank with similar-sized species.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: A minimum of 15-20 gallons for a small group, with larger tanks allowing for a bigger school and more space for swimming.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F)
- pH: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
- Aquascape: The Raccoon Tetra does well in planted aquariums with driftwood, leaf litter, and a dark substrate to mimic its natural environment and bring out its subtle colors. A gentle water flow is ideal.
